There was a concern for a while that Whistler wasn’t going to have any late night medal ceremonies during the Olympics. The Celebration Plaza (you know, that giant hole that’s in the middle of the ground near Blendz) was supposed to be the center of the universe when the Olympics are happening. Instead VANOC (because of the recession) cut the idea of having medal ceremonies in Whistler.
The idea was all the medal ceremonies would take place in Vancouver. But straight up… That’s lame! It obviously annoyed broadcasters, Olympians, the public and of course merchants.
It’s going to be hectic here during the Olympics, but we should at least encourage people to spend the night and spend their money here! VANOC bowed down the public pressure and scrounged up the $5 to $7 million to get the ceremonies to take place here.
It’s going to cost about $12.8 million to get the plaza up. The federal government is subsidizing the remainder that VANOC doesn’t. The deal was signed on Tuesday and it’s going to happen.
This is good news I think. The plaza will be nice.
What’s your reaction?
Hello,

Thanks
