Miss Powder Mountain - Kate Turner

A lil’ about myself…

Growing up as the middle child of two highschool teachers in a small town about 40 minutes east of Toronto, I had no idea what I was going to do when I graduated highschool. So I did what every confused teenager trying to please their parents did, and went off to University. I’ve always had an interest in the media and advertising, so I enrolled at Wilfrid Laurier University in Communication Studies. The summer between my second and third year, I had the opportunity to live and work in Vancouver for a few months, and fell in love with the West! I flew home at the end of that summer kicking and screaming (ok, well there was no kicking…or screaming, but you get the idea) and was less than thrilled to be back in good ‘ol Ontario. I vowed to finish up my degree and head back out West. Pronto.

I made it through my final year and, leaving behind my beloved Toronto Maple Leafs, hightailed it to the Rockies, Communication Studies degree in hand. My destination: Panorama Mountain Village! I decided to follow my passion for snowboarding and live at a “real” ski resort, neat!! My first season there I worked as a supervisor in the glamorous field of housekeeping. I could already see my degree being put to work!! Right. I also had the opportunity to travel around and hit up all the other mountains in the area, sick!

Still at Pano the following season, I was lucky enough to land (no pun intended!!) a sweet job working at the RK Heli-Plex. I worked in the lodge with guests from all over the world with a fantastic crew, and had the incredible opportunity to ride spectacular untouched powder for the first time in my life. It’s safe to say I was hooked!! It became my mission to find more powdair!!!

After an epic season, I decided it was time for a change from the small resort life. I packed my car so full that I could only see out the front windshield and the driver-side window, and left BC again. Destination: Asia. No, I didn’t drive there. First I had to drive home across Canada to bring all my stuff home and drop off my car. Fun drive! I spent an amazing 13 months teaching English in South Korea, and once finished spent another 4 months exploring Southeast Asia.

It wasn’t long after being back in Ontario that I was hankering for my powder fix, so I once again packed up my little red car and made the drive back to BC! I had decided on Big White as my destination this time because I was eager to compete in boarder-cross competitions, and this was where the majority of them were being held. I did well in the races, but to be honest they scared the hell outta me, so I vowed to stick to the pow!

Fast forward to a few months ago…I moved to Whistler!! It seemed only natural for me to end up here, so here I am. Enter “Miss Powder Mountain” competition. YES PLEASE!!! And the rest, as they say (who’s “they”?!?) is history!!
