There was a serious incident today (December 28) in Fernie B.C.
Several snowmobilers were swept away in a huge avalanche. The tragically 8 people are still missing.
There was a search and rescue operation going on, but they had to call off the search at 7pm due to conditions and low light. In the morning the search will continue.
Luckily there were three people that managed to dig themselves out of the snow. They were taken to the hospital and are safe. Two have been checked out and one is still in the hospital under observation.
It’s very tragic, but it’s not uncommon. Last year, there were a few deaths at Whistler. They took place in the permanently closed areas in Whistler. Even if there isn’t a lot of snow, a small amount can push you off 50 meter cliffs.
Let’s make sure there’s no more incidents. Be careful and think about taking an avananche course.
It’s going to be especially dangerous around here considering the amount of snow we’re getting right now.
