Welcome Dinner

If you have your eyes open and have walked around the village, or been on Highway #99 at any point in the last month, you’ll know that there has been an election going on. Well the election actually took place on Saturday and the results are in and the mayor is Ken Melamed.

Ken was originally elected in 2005, and has just been reelected. In case you haven’t clicked in, this is the person who will be in charge of this ski town during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It’s a pretty big job, but the community seems to be happy with him.

I said hello to him at the welcome dinner. He seems very nice and is very involved. Ken like most people here started out as a liftie - that’s pretty cool. Ken is on several board and committees, he’s really involved with keeping Whistler clean and beautiful and green, and to top it all off he is a volunteer ski patrol. Imagine if you break your leg and get saved by the mayor? That’d be cool!

I have a little bit of gossip actually. Ken came to an open jam night at blacks last week. According to various sources, he bust out a really awesome freestyle on the mic.

That’s groovy dude! Keep it up Mr. Mayor.

Check out a quick little bio on him on Whistler.ca. We’re in his town. Let’s show him love.

I tried to vote, but alas, I was not allowed to vote because I’m a brand new resident of Whistler. According to the unnoffical election results published by The Pique, Ken won by just over 300 votes. He only received over 1500. That just goes to show you the importance of voting.
